Skills we’re looking for
  • Experience in either data science or open source software.
  • Experience building and/or managing a technical community.
  • Understanding of Git, Git-flow and CI/CD. You don’t have to be a superuser, but we make tools built around Git and you’ll need to know how to use them.
  • Experience blogging or publishing technical content online. Bonus points if it’s related to open source or data science. 
  • Strong communication skills. Everyone on our team, from engineers to developer advocates, needs to be able to communicate over digital platforms kindly and clearly.
  • Proficient written and spoken English is required.

We are working on a notion.so-like team management app. The MVP design is near completion. We are looking for a CTO and full-stack Lead Developer who will oversee all technical aspects, coach the technical team, establish a technological vision and actively lead the company's application development from scratch. Responsibilities



- Full Stack development, with focus on node.js backend and API (or fullstack, if you prefer)

- Lead the selection of frameworks and educate stakeholders about the pro’s and con’s and develop an evolving architecture that allows us to scale over time.

Required skills

- You have been responsible for the deployment and maintenance of both test (CI/CD, unit tests) and production environments.
- You have set up and monitored AWS resources for performance and economy.

Who will you work with?
You are the first real permanent member in the software engineering team and will lead it. You will report to the Founder and Advisors, and work closely with the Chief Products Officer on product strategy and implementation.

In the first couple of years, a fully-fledged product team will be built around you, with additional engineers reporting to you, a product owner to set product direction, and contributors from UI/UX, data science, operations, etc. as needed.

The next 5 years:
The founding team is still evaluating various possible strategic directions (and would love any input you have!) Once strategic clarity is established, we will undertake a series of technology proof-of-concept projects based on use cases that have been validated, before moving on to the long-term foundations of our platform. Fundamentally, we intend to re-build the electricity retailer in the first 18-24 months, using a “99.9% digital” paradigm.

Subsequently, we will experiment with the real game changers in a new world empowered by the internet-of-things, further renewables penetration, and advancements in multiple intersecting industries, especially electric vehicles (EV) usage. That’s where the fun is. 

What you will do:
You are engineer number 1, hired to build a software engineering function in your image. You report to the founding CTO, and work closely with the CPO and CEO on product strategy and implementation. Over the first couple of years, a fully-fledged product team will be formed, with engineers, a product owner, and contributors e.g. UI/UX, DS, ops, etc. as needed.


Your specific responsibilities for the first 18 months are likely to include:

Building your team
  • Setting up the dev environment (processes + tools + internal systems), i.e. setting standards and best practices for dev ops, testing, monitoring, etc.
  • Devising a style guide/design patterns, standards for code evaluation, etc.
  • Working with product to develop and refine a project management/delivery model, and to implement and iterate on the daily processes that serve this model
  • Defining a competency model for engineers
  • Assessing hiring needs for engineering, then planning and executing a hiring plan
  • Growing your engineers (and measuring that growth)
  • Taking the engineering function’s seat at the table, ensuring representation in all strategic contexts (e.g. roadmap prioritisation, budgeting, collaboration models)

Building the product
  • Designing the platform’s foundational architecture according to attribute-based priorities provided by the product/business, including the selection of languages, frameworks, libraries, etc.
  • Executing high-level prototypes to establish the viability and value of selected high-importance interventions/concepts
  • Managing and supervising the design and implementation of all product features
  • Ensuring quality of code, of system, and of all technical aspects of the product
  • Contributing to strategic decisions (e.g. buy-build) by performing the relevant system analysis, evaluations, design/planning, etc.
After the first 18 months, the intention is to do more of the first list and less of the second. You should bear this in mind from day one.

Where will you be based?
You can be based at a location of your preference and convenience for the next 24 months as the company has agreed to work remotely due to COVID situation.

Between US$40,000 to US$80,000 cost to the company is the budgeted range. Payment procedure will be that you raise a monthly invoice inclusive of taxes if any, and it's paid by bank international transfer.

About GooseChase

GooseChase is a rapidly growing, fully remote web and mobile platform for creating and facilitating scavenger hunts. Through our website, organizers create custom "hunts" for anything from on-boarding new employees, touring museums, engaging at festivals, educating students and more! Participants can compete as teams or individuals to submit photo/video, text or GPS based missions through our native Android and iOS apps.

The key technologies we use are:
  • Front-End: TypeScript with React (Redux architecture), HTML, SCSS & Webpack.
  • Back-End: K8s, Docker, Django, REST (Tastypie), Task Queuing (Celery, Redis), Postgres, Nginx, Gunicorn.
Because of the flexibility and ease-of-use of our product, we have successfully powered game types ranging from festival-wide competitions, with thousands of dollars in prizes, to K-12 classroom lessons on government types, featuring gummy bears to help demonstrate the differences between a dictatorship and a democracy!

Responsibilities

As a Full Stack Engineer, you’ll have the opportunity to create new, exciting features for our user base of game organizers and game participants. You will work directly with our design and mobile teams to bring feature mock-ups to life, delighting our users and ensuring the delivery of high-quality code that focuses on reliability and performance.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Being familiar and up-to-date with the platform functionality (online game manager & participant mobile apps).
  • Working with our customer success & design teams to understand the motivations for a feature & coding it with those objectives in mind. Put another way, we want you to know why you are doing what you’re doing!
  • Developing the front and back-end components for new features that will help game organizers run games more effectively while delighting participants in new and unexpected ways.
  • Participating as a member of the development team  - contributing to PR reviews, sharing learnings so the rest of the team can improve, etc.
  • Working under limited supervision with significant latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Skills

The candidate for this position must be:
  • At an advanced level in both front-end and back-end web/application development (can be personal projects and/or work experience).
  • Possessing a strong command of programming best practices in autonomous and collaborative work.
  • Able to take ownership of work, maintaining high standards of performance, reliability & security.
  • An excellent communicator, problem solver, and creative thinker.
  • Located within, or has regular working hours within North American time zones (UTC-5 to UTC-8) to ensure sufficient overlap with our distributed product team.

Although not required, it would be a big plus if the candidate had past experience:
  • Working with React, Django, and Docker.
  • Working with smaller teams, especially in a remote setting.

The role

  • Take ownership of the product's User Experience and be the voice of the user.

About you
  • You have 4+ years of Product Design experience, having shipped complex products, ideally in the B2B SaaS space. 
  • Familiarity with Sketch is preferable.
  • A systemic design approach and experience in developing the foundations, patterns and governing rules of a design system are essential.
  • You can create clear and friendly user interfaces and have a portfolio to showcase your work that equally balances UX with elegant UI.
  • You love solving problems through design and can communicate your ideas with sketches, journey maps, wireframes, screen flows, and rapid prototypes.
  • You can understand & identify user requirements through interviews, user testing, contextual inquiries, and data analysis. 
  • You are good at communicating design decisions clearly. You’ll present your design concepts and prototypes to stakeholders and clients.

  • You have good project and organisational skills, helping plan and deliver design priorities.
